This summer, join us for curator spotlight talks. Our history, art, astronomy, and natural history curators will give short talks and answer questions from a spot in our galleries, introducing objects from our collection that highlight upcoming exhibitions and programming.
Access to each of the talks is free with general Museum admission
AUGUST SCHEDULE
Fri., August 8 | 12:30 p.m.
Dr. Chris Graham, Curator of the American Revolution
Does every good story need a villain? South Carolina certainly has one from the Revolutionary War. But is it who you think it is? Let's explore with the saber of a famous leader, and the musket of an unknown soldier, while thinking about the place of good guys and bad guys in making sense of ourselves in the past... and today.
Fri., August 15 | 12:30 p.m.
Laura Conte, Curator of History
To better understand the histories of South Carolina and those who have lived in the Palmetto State, it can be beneficial to study examples of objects that were made here. Further, the diversity of the regions of South Carolina (divided between the Upstate, the Midlands, and the Lowcountry) speaks to a diversity of natural resources and geographic and historical evolutions in each. Each month, we will look at an object from a region of our state and talk about ways it connects us to the richness of cultures that have long existed here. We will cover examples of textiles made in Richland County, and Lowcountry silver, among others. Don’t miss it! It’ll be fun!
Fri., August 22 | 12:30 p.m.
Paul E. Matheny III, Chief Curator & Director of Curatorial Affairs
A special conversation with Paul E. Matheny III, Chief Curator & Director of Curatorial Affairs, highlighting items from the museum’s collection.
